Ramsay

Victorian Football Association
Career: 1893

It seems that the name Ramsay/Ramsey was used as pseudonym on occasions by some Carlton players. Perhaps they did not want to be identified as playing football by their employers when they should have been working?.

Or is it?
The Carlton Gazette in a review of the July 29 match against Geelong, says "Ramsay" is an old Carlton player with a new name.

Perhaps Charles Coulson who retired three weeks earlier?

1893 July 29
Ramsay a defender, debuted for the Blues in the game against Geelong at the M.C.G.
The Argus report said he played as good as Carlton stalwart Charles Coulson on the back line.

Ramsay was not selected in the initial Carlton squad for this game.
This was not unusual, as players had difficultly with work commitments and transport.

1893 August 5
He was named in the squad against Port Melbourne, but did not play.

1893 August 14
Ramsay played against Melbourne at the M.C.G.
The Argus named him as one of the Blues better players.

During the 1890 season Melbourne had a player named Robert Ramsay who also filled in for a game in 1892.
Recruited from Melbourne University Ormond College. He served in WW1 and received a bravery award. (demonwiki). Same person?

1904 September 09
The Herald mentions three old Carltonians taking part in a QLD v NSW match. Dr. Ross, Herman, and Rev. F. W. Ramsay of Brisbane.
