Game Review

This game was significant for two reasons; one because it was the first time in Carlton’s VFL history that the club had achieved a hat-trick of wins, and two, it featured the debut of one of the Blues early greats; the brilliant, controversial, future triple-Premiership star George Topping.

St Kilda posted the first two goals before Jim Martin kicked truly to score the first major for the Blues. The Saints replied twice more before Jim Opie snapped truly just before quarter-time. From the resumption, Archie Snell scored number three, and Charlie Tough place-kicked a monster goal from near the centre of the ground. Fox and McNamara then bought up numbers 5 and 6 before half-time as Carlton took control the match and ran out convincing winners by 23 points.

In other results, Geelong beat Essendon to strengthen its hold on fourth place. Even at this early stage, the top four sides in Fitzroy, Collingwood, Essendon and Geelong were looking very secure. Carlton sat sixth, with a percentage of 61.1.

McShane, one of the famous football family. The new man put up a brace of goals on Saturday." (Sportsman 9 June p6)

Footnote

Carlton players wore crepe armbands as a mark of respect for Alex Barlow whose mother passed away on the morning of the match.
