Game Review

Fitzroy were first out of the blocks and had scored two goals before the Blues added their first major from Harold Carter with a long, low, skimming drop kick. Harvey Dunn then added a behind. The visitors added another goal and at this stage were playing all over Carlton. They missed a chance to increase their advantage by missing three easy chances to goal. Then they added two more goals while the Blues could only add a behind by Horrie Clover. Good play through the agency of Bill Koop got the ball to Harvey Dunn who finally kicked the Blues' second goal. At the bell the Blues trailed 2.5 - 5.7
Frank Irwin replused a Fitzroy attack, and Harvey Dunn kicked to Hedley Blackmore whose kick resulted in a behind. The Blues attacked through Joe Kelly and Horrie Clover added another behind. Pressuring the Fitzroy defenders, Jimmy Robertson added the Blues' third goal. The Blues' pressure was paying off and a mistake by a maroon defender allowed Hedley Blackmore to goal. Fitzroy steadied, and added two goals. It was exciting football as both teams strived for dominance. The Blues replied. Norm Collins kicked to Bill Koop who took a great mark and goaled. Horrie Clover's clever play enabled Jimmy Robertson to score Carlton's sixth goal. Not to be out done, the 'Roys added two more goals to hold a lead of 19 points. The Blues reduced the lead with a great mark and goal to Hedley Blackmore. Harold Carter then missed an easy chance just before half time, and Blues were down by 10 points at the long break. 7.11 - 9.9
The lead was soon out to 16 points before Horrie Clover scored the Blues' eighth. Goal for goal, Jimmy Robertson cleverly scouting the pack snapped the tenth Carlton goal. The Blues then hit the front with another snap, this time by Ted Brewis. The lead was soon increased when from a fine kick by Harvey Dunn found Hedley Blackmore and he nicely steered the ball through for the Blues' thirteenth. 13.11 - 11.13
Fitzroy stung by the Blues onslaught quickly added three goals to regain the lead by six points. Harvey Dunn's shot hit the post, then Horrie Clover drop kicked the Blues' fourteenth. Alex Duncan repelled a Fitzroy attack. Hedley Blackmore goaled running into an open goal. The wind had sprung up favouring Carlton's Sydney Road goal. Carlton clung to a six point lead and fans were anxiously waiting for the bell to ring. Joe Kelly constantly drove the Blues into attack. During one of his attacking moves a defender left his limping opponent Bill Koop early to intercept Kelly. Joe Kelly cleverly kicked the ball over the defender's head to Bill Koop for an easy goal. Nice work by Harold Carter enabled Harvey Dunn to kick Carlton's last and eighteenth goal. Fitzroy had tired, but the Blues had kept up the pressure to run out winners by 22 points.

Defender Fred Gilby celebrated a win on debut for the Blues in this solid victory against a committed Fitzroy team at Princes Park. After this round, Carlton was still well in contention for a finals berth - sitting sixth on the ladder, but only four points adrift of third, and with a healthy percentage.

At the end of this round Carlton were in 6th spot on the ladder with a percentage of 113.1.

Les Witto Ceremony

"There was an impressive ceremony at Carlton the match Carlton versus on Saturday week, before Fitzroy, in connection with the death of the Carlton player, Les Witto. The flags were at half-mast, and when the teams filed on to the field they and the umpires formed up and stood for two minutes with bowed heads. The large crowd of 25,000 people bared their heads, and stood in silence which was most impressive.

Witto, who came to Carlton this season from Broken Hill, had made himself very popular. He was the sole support of his widowed mother. The Carlton Club took up a collection on Saturday, and this met with a liberal response. Subscription lists have been issued to the secretary of each League Club, and to the various depots where football tickets are sold. It is hoped that the various clubs will show their sympathy in a practical manner." (Daily News (Perth) September 10 p4)
