Game Review

Carlton entered this final home and away game of the season three wins and a massive 44% clear on top of the ladder, facing a winless St Kilda team already condemned to yet another wooden spoon. What ensued was one of the biggest upsets in the early years of the VFL.

On a wet and windy Saturday afternoon at the Junction Oval, the Saints took better advantage of the breeze – especially in the third quarter – and played determined team football. Carlton actually had more scoring shots, but woeful inaccuracy saw the Blues beaten by 12 points in a massive boilover.

Of course, strange results can ensue when one side has little or nothing to play for. However, this sensational outcome was a little too hard to believe. Rumour and innuendo were rife throughout the week leading up to the finals, culminating in another shock when three Carlton players; Alex "Bongo" Lang, Doug Gillespie and Doug Fraser were dropped from the side on the morning of the Semi Final clash against South Melbourne.

Making that announcement, Carlton coach Elliott reportedly told his players, "it seems the lads have been prepared to sell us out ".

At the end of this round Carlton were in 1st spot on the ladder with a percentage of 160.1.
