Game Review

The Football Record reported that "Carlton will be minus the services of McGregor, Barningham, and Wilson to-day. Their places will be filled by Johnson (who last season played several good games forward), Payne, and Haughton (late of Northcote)".

The Carlton contingent came down with something like gloomy countenances, because three of their stars wert eclipsed for the day. McGregor and Barningham were known to have been injured on the previous Saturday at Fitzroy, and Billy Dick had a gravel rash on the knee, but he took no particular notice of it until Thursday, when it had become inflamed and too painful to permit him to play.

It was a strenuous game. They went at it good and hard, dash and gameness were shown all round, and the spectators got fair value for their money. Carlton used up their stock of energy in the third quarter, and wereunable to stave off the enemy in the final term, during which the Essendon captain handled his men with great generalship.

One of the big faults of Jim Marchbank in the first half of the Carlton-Essendon game was the number of free kicks that were given against him.

Remarkably fine play in defence of their respective strongholds was shown in the last quarter by Capt. Wells (Carlton) and Capt. Belcher (Essendon).

At the end of this round Carlton were in 3rd spot on the ladder with a percentage of 140.5.
