This match would be tight for the first three quarters. Inaccurate kicking by Carlton (23 behinds to 8) would make it a lot closer than it should have been. Carlton only had a break of 6 behinds at three quarter time but would storm home, kicking 7.9 to 4.0 in the final quarter to run out 33 point winners, though it had almost twice as many scoring shots.

Brett Ratten would be judged best afield, with 33 possessions and 2 goals. Anthony Koutoufides was effective up forward, with 4 goals from 21 possessions. Brendan Fevola and Adrian Hickmott, with 22 possessions, were also effective with 3 goals each. Mark Porter dominated the ruck with 28 hit outs.

This game would be notable for the first meeting of Aaron Hamill in St Kilda colours against his old side. He would not be received well by his former supporters and was well beaten by Simon Beaumont.

It was also the debut games for 3 players: Simon Wiggins was the first player drafted in 2000 (one of Carlton's 3 first round picks) to debut. He would fly high to take a strong mark in the forward line and goal from only his second kick. Rookie Jordan Doering would also play his first AFL game, while former Western Bulldog Jim Plunkett would play his first game for Carlton.

This win put Carlton into 6th position on the ladder, after spending most of the year outside the 8.
