Game Review

On this Monday afternoon of the annual King’s Birthday holiday, all VFL teams played their second round of matches in three days – interesting to contemplate in light of today's talk about 6 day breaks not being long enough! Carlton’s opponent in a danger game at the East Melbourne Cricket Ground was fifth-placed University, who were playing well and capable of an upset if the Blues were not switched on.

Unfortunately for the Students, that was not the case. The visitors bounced out to 13-point break at quarter-time, and steadily extended their lead to a final margin of 39 points in a big blow to University’s finals hopes. The Blues’ already large percentage got another boost with this result, while Essendon consolidated second place when they crushed Melbourne at the nearby MCG. Collingwood and Geelong clung to third and fourth respectively, one win ahead of Richmond and University.

In an interesting sidelight to this match, Tasmanian Jim Tumilty played for Carlton in both games over the weekend. He kicked his one and only VFL goal against the Students, but was then not seen again in the Carlton seniors – giving him the shortest career of any Blue to have played more than one match.

At the end of this round Carlton were in 1st spot on the ladder with a percentage of 176.4.
