Game Review

This game was memorable because of another brain-snap by St Kilda’s volatile Robbie ‘Mad Dog’ Muir. When Carlton seized control of the match in the third quarter, Muir went berserk, lashing out at any Blue within range. Field umpire Kevin Smith ran in to restore order, and Muir let fly at him with a torrent of abuse, then spectacularly hurled his mouthguard to the turf. He ended up on report for threatening the central umpire, abusing a goal umpire, head-butting Carlton’s Bruce Doull, and striking his former team-mate Val Perovic. Muir was found guilty of all charges by the tribunal, and his VFL career ended when he was suspended for twelve weeks.

Apart from that, there was some good football played - especially by Carlton. Warren Ralph produced a welcome return to form with six goals, and Bruce Doull kept a tight rein on the Saints' boom youngster Tony Lockett.

In other matches in this round, Brian Taylor kicked 8 goals for Richmond as the Tigers beat Collingwood, and strugglers Melbourne caused a huge upset when they thrashed the previously undefeated Geelong by more than ten goals at the MCG.

When the dust settled, the top five teams on the ladder were Essendon, Hawthorn, Carlton, Geelong and Collingwood.

On Saturday Wayne Johnston gained three votes for his superb performance against St Kilda. When the Blues were struggling against the Saints, the Carlton skipper set a fine example with his scintillating style. - Inside Football Player of the Year.

A good try by the Saints. They bustled Carlton all day to keep within range, then piled on five goals in the final quarter to go down by just 14 points. For the Blues, Warren Ralph kicked six goals at full forward and Wayne Johnston weathered the rough and tumble further downfield to collect 28 kicks. The Saints missed easy scoring shots, and to add to their bad luck in front of goals, Bruce Doull kept young star forward Tony Lockett to just two goals. - Football Record.
