Game Review

This was a remarkable match, though we are sure it is not one that Carlton fans will remember too fondly. The Blues started the game very well against the reigning premiers, matching the physical intensity of the Lions, and forcing their opponents into many mistakes. The second quarter was even better. The Lions' emerging centre half forward powerhouse Jonathan Brown was off the ground injured, and their superstar midfield (Voss, Akermanis, Black, Lappin) was being beaten by a hard-working, desperate Carlton side, with Jarrad Waite keeping Akermanis quiet. Up forward Corey McKernan, Waite and Adrian Hickmott were bagging goals, and Carlton forged away to a 34-point lead. Carlton's crowd was exuberant (chanting supporters were in full voice) and it looked like a massive boilover was on the cards.

Then at half-time, the Lions changed their game plan, and swingman Martin Pike spearheaded a remarkable resurgence. Carlton kicked the first goal of the third quarter, before Brisbane flexed their muscles and took complete control, booting eight unanswered majors to lead by 34 points at the last break. As the home side wilted, the final quarter was more of the same. The Brisbane midfield continued their dominance, and a flood of nine goals came as the visitors pulled away to an impressive victory by 77 points.

Most pundits expected such a result, but Blues fans were left to wonder wonder what had happended after such an impressive first quarter and a half.
