Stephen Banbury was a local boy from West Preston YCW, he came up through the U/19's to later play Reserve Grade Football in 1979 for the Blues. Banbury was a solid on-baller who liked to kick a goal. He was also a key member of the U/19's back-to-back premierships in 1978 and 1979 which was under the guidance of former Carlton premiership winger Bryan Quirk. In the 1978 Grand Final, Carlton hit the front for the first time early in the final quarter when Stephen Banbury kicked two glorious goals, one of which traveled almost 75 metres. He was named in the best players in both U/19's Grand Finals.

He did not manage a Senior game for Carlton.
