Victorian Football Association
Games: 7
Goals: 4
Career: 1891
Born: 29 June, 1873, Eaglehawk, Victoria

William Edward Culmsee was recruited from Rainbow, a Fitzroy junior club.

1891 July 25
Debutant Culmsee scored a goal very early in the game against Port Melbourne at the Port Melbourne ground.
As this was his first game for the Blues, it was possibly a goal with his first kick.

1891 CFC Annual Report, Culmsee scored 4 goals during the season.

1892 May 31
The Bendigo Advertiser;
Permits granted, W. E. Culmsee, Carlton to play with Sandhurst.

1892 June 01 Wednesday
Sandhurst played North Sandhurst and the Bendigo Independent (June 04) said;
"The match was interesting only in the fact that Culmsee, from whom great things were expected, stripped for the first time in Sandhurst colors. He played excellently and will be a great acquisition to the club."
"A doubtful compliment: Culmsee's clearance from the Carlton club read - 'I have the honor to inform that the Carlton Club do not intend to choose you this year.' Nevertheless he is a good one."

1892 June 18
The Bendigo Advertiser said of the Eaglehawk vs Sandhurst match;
"Culmsee, late of Carlton, did not come up to expectations." (He was playing for Sandhurst)

1893 May 17
Culmsee was one of the better players for Sandhurst in their match against North Bendigo
(Bendigo Independent May 18)

As Sandhurst won the premiership in 1894, perhaps there is a photograph of the team which might include W. E. Culmsee?

1894 August 16
Culmsee played in the Eaglehawk v Sandhurst match as a follower for Sandhurst. He was named among Sandhurst's better players.

1898 June 04
"Culmsee, the old Carlton player, was a tower of strength to the Rovers ....." (Rovers v Fremantle game)
(Clare's Weekly, Perth p16)

William Edward Culmsee, a police constable, living at Mt. Lawley W.A. in 1921

Former VFA umpire Dick Gibson reviewing this 1891 team picture in the Sporting Globe July 22 1933 p6, said;
"Lumsley also was a clever player."
It seems Gibson was mistaken, and should have named Culmsee instead of Lumsley.
Blueseum had produced a bio page for Lumsley, but Gibson's reference was the only details we could find.

William Edward Culmsee (79) a retired police officer, of Clever Street West Perth died of natural causes on 17 March 1953.

Footnote:

As it happens a 1933 Sporting Globe article incorrectly remembered Culmsee as E. Lumsley. Thanks to a new discovery we can confirm that William Culmsee is in fact the person in the 1891 team photo.
