"Carlton are delighted and somewhat embarassed at the enthusiasm of local juniors to join their Third Eighteen. Last week 80 trained under new coach Harvey Dunn.
Some of the boys, all are under 19, are six footers and Carlton expect their promotion to be rapid. Most of them are residentially bound to Carlton.
One who is not is Brian Ellen, whose father played 39 games with Carlton. He is tied to Collingwood and Carlton will ask the Magpies to release him to allow him to play with his father's old team." (Herald March 21 p18)
No player named Ellen has played senior football, however Les Allen* played 29 games 1930-31

Perhaps it was not a misprint in The Herald and Ellen is the correct spelling?
AUSTRALIANFOOTBALL.com has listed Les Ellen* playing for Carlton see https://australianfootball.com/players/player/les%2Ballen/5073
