2000 National Draft

Perhaps famous for avoiding the draft, and in particular trading out of the earlier rounds in seasons just completed, the Blues appeared to embrace the 2000 National Draft with gusto. At the outset, the Draft appeared a good one with Picks #1 and #2 taken by St Kilda for Riewoldt and Koschitscke, and ultimately the Blues went for:

Pick 4 : Luke Livingston, Bendigo U18, VCFL
Pick 11 : Trent Sporn, North Adelaide, SANFL
Pick 15 : Simon Wiggins, Tasmania U18, Tas
Pick 31 : Blake Campbell, Murray U18, VCFL
Pick 46 : Sean O'Keeffe, Murray U18, VCFL
Pick 61 : Callan Beasy, Bendigo U18, VCFL

Picks 4 and 11 were gleaned from trades for Aaron Hamill and Justin Murphy respectively, the former under sufferance as St Kilda made Hamill an offer he could not refuse, the latter as part of a true trade for draft picks. Carlton fans were excited about the idea of embracing the draft, something our nemesis Essendon had been doing for some time.

Alas, the 2000 National Draft, despite it's promise, proved to be a long-term disappointment for Carlton with only Simon Wiggins remaining by the time the 2007 Season had rolled around (and the only 100 gamer from the group)..
