Lewis played 15 games for the Blues in Season 1900. He kicked 9 goals for Carlton after being recruited from Richmond City. His full name was William Lachlan Mark Lewis and was born at Hamilton, Victoria.

Lewis was granted a permit to Richmond City in 1901.

At the same time there was a Harry Lewis who played 4 games in 1899 and left Carlton in mid 1900. From 1897 - 2017 there has been no other players named Lewis who have played senior VFL/AFL football for Carlton.

After departing Carlton Bill headed west where for a time he was publican of the Palace Hotel in Davyhurst, Bill lived in Kalgoorie from 1916 until his death in the same town on the 10th May 1940 at the age of 65.
