Born in Melbourne, Henry Huston (Harry) Morgan was one of the very early Blues; the 29th player to represent the Carlton Football Club in the foundation year of the VFL in 1897. Unfortunately, we know very little about Harry, apart from the bare facts that he was recruited from West Melbourne, and played ten consecutive matches for Carlton between rounds 4 and 14 of that momentous season.

In each of those ten games, Harry was part of Carlton’s four-man following division. VFL rules at that time allowed 20 players per side, with no replacements or substitutions allowed. Each team used four followers, working together to force or rush the ball forward, much like a rugby scrum. Harry filled this role in all of his games, but celebrated victory only twice – both times against St Kilda, in rounds 6 and 13.

The year ended in a heavy defeat by Collingwood in round 14, and soon afterward one of football’s enduring traditions was established with the first end of year clean-out. We don’t know if he jumped or if he was pushed, but Harry was one of eight senior players to leave in the off season, and his subsequent exploits are unknown. He was said to have been aged 52 when he died on November 5, 1924 at East Melbourne.

Twenty-four years after Harry played his last match, another Harry Morgan – William 'Harry' Morgan – made his debut for Carlton at the age of 31 in 1921. The second Harry Morgan was a well-credentialed and well-travelled footballer from WA, but he too, played only a handful of games in his only year with the Blues.

Harry H Morgan passed away on the 5th November, 1924 aged 53.
