Little League

The Blueseum hopes to also track our past performances at Little League level, including those of Carlton players known to have played with Carlton at higher levels, through this page.

Little League

Ted Dumaresq in 1965 came up with the idea of a Little League. It needed a sponsor, so Graham Donaldson arranged for the State Savings Bank of Victoria to provide the funds.
In 2013 club historian Tony De Bolfo wrote a story on Ted Dumaresq and Graham Donaldson.

The SSB Little League started on May 13, 1967 with 9 clubs, (Collingwood, Hawthorn and South Melbourne didn’t join until later). It was for boys under the age of 11 on January 1 of each season. Graham Donaldson was the driving force and was an ex-Carlton player and captain and was also their current reserve coach. In 1967 he had been an “member of the bank’s staff for the past 16 years” and was appointed full-time organiser of the Little League, with the games being played during the half time break at the senior games and early on used the whole ground. (The State Saving Bank of Victoria was the bank run by the state (and is now part of the Commonwealth Bank).

Alan Mangels was Carlton’s first Little League captain and was signed up by Carlton on June 9, 1967 as an 11 year old (his family was about to move into North Melbourne territory he father was an early Carlton Under 19 premiership captain).

Melbourne's Steve Smith was the first player to graduate from the the first season (1967) Little League to play senior VFL football. Ted Whitten Jnr, played senior VFL football before Smith, but was from the second year of the Little League's inception in 1968.

Since then the Carlton Little League has also had players graduate through to the Blues U/19's, reserves and senior football. Some of these players also played senior football at rival clubs.
