Lower Grade Servicemen

Reserves - World War II


Joe Askew (or Jim) Askew played in the Carlton Reserves 1938-1939, he fought alongside Jim Park in New Guinea.
Askew served for nearly six years, discharged in 1945 and played with Glenelg (SA) then Benalla as playing coach in 1946.

Arthur Wilson Chitty brother of Carlton champion Bob Chitty played for the Carlton Reserves in 1940.
Arthur Chitty joined the 2/23rd battalion A. I. F. and was killed in action at El Alamein Egypt on July 22 1942.

Ernie Pilkington served in the Royal Australian Navy from 1939 -1945, Ernie survived the sinking of his ship the H.M.A.S. Vampire in 1942.
He played for the Carlton Reserves in 1941.

"Ted Jackson from the Carlton second eighteen and the Carlton first eleven. Previously he played for the VJCA."
Jackson is photographed in the R.A.A.F. Beaufighter squadron football team. Most of the players are ground staff as the flying crew risked injury playing.

Possibly a printing error.
Broman played seven VFL games with Richmond and was in their reserves side for three years. He served in the RAN during WW2

Mentioned in The Herald May 04 (p3) 1917 as one of Carlton's serving soldiers a Pvt. F. Fielding.
It was thought it may have been Frank Field, however new information shows Frank did not enlist until July 09 1917

Leo La Franchi played reserve grade football for Carlton from 1938 to 1939 after being recruited from Coburg where he played from 1936 to 1937. He went back to Coburg during 1939 and played there until 1940. La Franchi enlisted in the Army and was tragically killed in active service. He was one of 145 men who were massacred by the Japanese at Parit Sulong on 22 January 1942 during the Malaya Campaign when wounded Australian and Indian soldiers were left behind by withdrawing troops after the Battle of Muar.
