Game Review

Despite winning the last 2 practice games for 2006 (against the Eagles and Bulldogs), Carlton went into this game under a cloud, and as the underdog. Over the previous month, the press was particularly nasty about the Club's administration, finances, and playing list - the last point a little odd given an influx of high draft picks to the Club. However, wooden spooners are always forecast to repeat the performance so it shouldn't have surprised the faithful.

But the Blues would take the game against the fancied Demons with hard running, a tight defence and 2 effective forwards in Jarrad Waite and Brendan Fevola.

It was the sort of game where no one could agree the Best on Ground, going variously to Matthew Lappin with 30 stats, Heath Scotland with 33 stats and 13 marks who played as a connecting midfielder, Fevola up forward, and Lance Whitnall, the rock in the backline with 9 marks. But the support cast was impressive, Kade Simpson with his personal best stats in 22, Andrew Carrazzo and Andrew Walker. Walker would take Demon Aaron Davey, who despite kicking 3 goals, was held relatively quiet around packs. Also in defence, Bret Thornton took on our nemesis Russell Robertson, and Luke Livingston did well enough on Melbourne skipper David Neitz.

This game marked the debut of Carlton's #1 Draft Pick from 2005, Marc Murphy, who would pull in 17 statistics. But it was not the number, but the quality, of these statistics that would impress - perfect kicks to leads, great vision, and contested ball on the ground. Young Murphy provided a highlight within the highlight.

It was also the Carlton debut of former Lion Dylan McLaren, who would play the resting ruck role. When McLaren came on, #1 ruckman Barnaby French would either have a rest on the bench or assist in the forward line. This took place in the second quarter, where a forward line of French, Waite and Fevola looked very threatening.

A fitting way to start the season, and 250th game, for Captain Kouta!
