Game Review

Playing his second game of VFL football (and his first for Carlton) Reuben Holland kicked three goals from a half-forward flank on this Saturday afternoon, as the Blues had yet another easy victory over the Melbourne Fuchsias at Princes Park. Continuing his run of consistent scores, full-forward Vin Gardiner bagged another four majors, and was unlucky not to finish with eight. His normal deadly accuracy deserted him on this occasion, and a number of his set-shots just missed.

The Blues lost Doug Fraser, Jack Baquie and Martin Gotz to injury prior to the game, replacing them with first-gamers Holland and Claude Cornish, plus defender Dick Harris. Melbourne made six changes and this didn’t help their cohesion.

The Argus newspaper summed the game up this way; “Both sides knew it was no use flurrying themselves, and they spent an agreeable afternoon on the green having kick for kick in friendly fashion, with the majority of kicks going to Carlton men.”

The Blues won by 65 points, with Clark, Wells, Gardiner, McGregor, Clancy and McDonald prominent in another dominant performance. Carlton’s percentage stood at 185.01 afterwards, putting the Blues one win and a mammoth 63.41% ahead of Essendon. Geelong and University were next, with Collingwood fifth.
