Game Review

Just when Carlton supporters where on the brink of despair, the Blues knocked over third-placed South Melbourne in a huge upset - thanks to a dominant defence that kept the Lakesiders goal-less after half-time, and a fine all-round team effort.

"Carlton, who have been spasmodic, sprung a genuine surprise by handsomely defeating South Melbourne on the Prince's Oval. They are really a formidable combination on their own ground, and there is every appearance of the major premiership being decided in favor of the luckiest team. The winners played a good, hard game, and had their kicking been commensurate in quality with their general play, they would have completely wiped the floor with the Southerners. After the initial term the famous Red and Whites were beaten at every point of the game."
(Jack Worrall, The Referee August 15)

At the end of this round Carlton were in 7th spot on the ladder with a percentage of 65.7.
