Game Review

Footscray were a shocking team during this period of the game. Their full back, after a point, kicked straight to the man on the mark who kicked it back for an embarrassingly easy goal.

A fine return to form by Carlton small man Ken Sheldon as the Blues downed Footscray at Princes Park, was judged as best player on the ground, while Sheldon's captain Mike Fitzpatrick was sterling in the ruck for Carlton and also received votes for his game. - Inside Football Player of the Year.

Sheldon in touch
What a fine comeback Carlton's Ken Sheldon has made to senior league football. Sheldon dominated Saturday's match against Footscray at Princes Park, but l didnt realise it was only his fourth game for the season - that makes his effort all the more meritorious. A severe hamstring injuet had sidelined Sheldon for almost half the season. However Sheldon's determination to suceed has helped him shrug off his injury and he's now back to his brilliant best much to the delight of the Carlton supporters. Sheldon was the architect of the Blues big win over Footscray on Saturday in his new role as ruck-rover. He kept gaining possession of the ball - and that's certainly the name of the game in wet conditions. Formerly, Sheldon was renowned as a goalsneak, but he's now an extremely consistent ruck rover - one of Carlron's vital linkmen. There's no doubt he'll play an important part in the Blues premiership bid this year. - Doug Wade Inside Football.

So much for the theory that players from WA struggle on "wet tracks". It's often been mentioned that WA players are unsuited to heavy grounds in Victoria because they're used to rock hard grounds back in sunny Perth. Carlton pair Peter Bosustow and Ken Hunter proved on Saturday that mud and slush is ni handicap for WA players. The former WA players revelled in the heavy going on Saturday as they have done several times during the wet season. At Princes Park Bosustow kicked five goals and Hunter played his usual reliable game across the half back line as the Blues crushed Footscray - Tony Greenberg Inside Football.

At first I couldn't quite understand Carlton coach David Parkin's comment that Ken Hunter was a typical Hathorn player! Parkin we know was a great Hawthorn player and also coached the Hawks to the 1978 flag so maybe it was a slip of the tongue? Perhaps not - Hunter certainly is relentless and his every move seems to be 100 percent effort. They're both attributes associated with Hawthorn, so maybe Parkin's remark about Carlton's WA recruit Ken Hunter was a fair summary. Carlton's two WA recruits Peter Bosustow and Ken Hunter have both adapted well to the hectic VFL tempo and contrary to popular opinion pre-season, they've done well in the wet. Bosustow is well up on the goalkicking table and has given the Blues a considerable boost up forward. At the other end of teh ground, Hunter as mentioned, is a tight defender who sticks close to his opponent's shoulder - can grab a fair mark too! - Kevin Sheedy Inside Football
