Game Review
Essendon continued their strong run against Carlton with this 26 point win over Carlton, the reigning premiers. Future Blue Justin Madden would make the best players for Essendon, and appear to be on his way to becoming a Blue from 1983 onwards. Ken Hunter leads the field in the race for the title of the 1982 Inside Football Player of the Year. The dependable defender was an inspiration to his team-mates with another close-checking game against Essendon last Saturday. Hunter marked strongly and repeatedly turned the advancing Bombers back to earn best on ground. - Inside Football Player of the Year.
''Beitzel Ball's bouncing back.
A couple of years ago when the then umpire's advisor Harry Beitzel instructed the umpires to let the game flow as much as possible. The game became clogged and umpires were forced to go back to handing out more free kicks to stop matches from becoming too crowded. Now, we have the 1982 version of Beitzel Ball, only this time it is under the direction of new umpire's boss Bill Deller. But the packs are worse and free kicks are almost impossible for the fans to judge.
Last Saturday's Essendon-Carlton match at VFL Park did not get flowing until the second half, some of the packs the worst I have seen for a couple of seasons. I heard a recent explaination that if every free kick was paid there would be nothing but free kicks in every VFL game. That might be true and umpires must use common sense in awarding free kicks, but at present there are not enough free kicks being paid and some players are being penalised. And the way things are going at present some teams most definitely will benefit from the new umpiring code.
Carlton already appears to be suffering, their small men not getting the protection they had in the past and their tacklers not being awarded. The Blues base a lot of their game on fierce tackling, but under the present set-up a player can hold onto the ball far longer and get away with it. The slower players are being kept in the game, while the good tacklers are not getting the rewards they deserve. Let's hope for football's sake that the present umpiring trend is moderated and that more free kicks are paid. And, more importantly, that good tackling is rewarded. - Jim Main Inside Football.''
''The Best from the West.
The standard of footballers joining VFL ranks from WA is simply tremendous. It always has been - with very few exceptions. The last two years have produced a wealth of skilled, gutsy players who have added something, well, classy to VFL football. Carlton defender Ken Hunter played another superb game against Essendon at VFL Park last Saturday. Hunter joined the Blues with very lttle fanfare last season, from Claremont, and quickly established himself as a dependable half back flanker capable of blanketing some of the League's most dangerous forwards. I had the pleasure of watching Hunter a couple of times last year. Sound judgement, sure ball handling and solid marking were the prime characteristics of his game. He looks set for a fabulous career in the VFL.
Hunter's arrival at Princes Park was slightly overshadowd by that of Peter Bosustow, who joined the Blues with a reputation for flair and character that he was quick to live up to last season. Bosustow is another fine WA product. He is a brilliant mark and often spectacular in his approach to the game, not just in the packs but roaming around the forward line frustrating his opportunity that comes his opponents. Like Hunter, Bosustow has a keen sense of the play and is quick to capitalise on any opportunity that comes his way. - Doug Wade Inside Football''
