Game Review

For the second successive week, Carlton would be on the road, having just journeyed to Adelaide the previous week to draw with Port. Fremantle and in particular Matthew Pavlich, were coming off a poor performance the previous week, which had attracted criticism in the media, so had plenty to prove.

The Blues got off to a good start to go a goal up at quarter time. They increased that margin by kicking the first goal of the second quarter. But the Dockers then kicked 6 unanswered goals to take an unassailable 4 goal lead, while the Blues seemed tired from the two successive trips.

The Blues would have the bulk of the play in the third quarter but fail to make the most of that on the scoreboard, kicking 2.6. The Dockers were still able to outscore them through greater efficiency, kicking 3.2 and went to the final change 26 points up.

The Blues persisted through the final quarter, kicking 3 unanswered goals as well as another 5 wasteful behinds to get as close as 13 points. While they outscored the Dockers 4 goals to 3 in that quarter, they still ended up going down by 19 points.

The Blues had no answers for the Dockers small forward pair of Medhurst and Farmer, who kicked 4 and 2 goals respectively.

In the end, this was just another match where Carlton were close but failed to capitalise - there is no doubt we could have had this game, with one more scoring shot, but early in 2005 we lacked the forward composure to make the most of our chances.

There would be further adverse repercussions arising from this match, with the subsequent suspension of Brendan Fevola for 2 matches.
