Game Review

Carlton lost to the Dockers in this wet game in the West, despite a stunning start and a lot of possession through the game. Despite great commitment, our inside 50 entries were continually cut off - oh for some spoiling and a small forward - and we fell away to lose by 35 points.

At selection the Blues welcomed David Cuningham for his first game for the year, omitting Simon White.

In a stunning start young Zac Fisher rammed one home to cap a high possession opening few minutes The Blues were in control and managed strong goals through Marc Murphy (stunning snap) and Levi Casboult (50m penalty / free), before Dale Thomas secured a lucky free and banana'd one from 35 out to really extend the lead. With minutes to go, Bradley Hill put the Dockers on the board with a delightful running goal on the outer wing. The luck seemed to be ours.... except for an injury to Sam Rowe

From quarter time onwards the Dockers lifted their tackling and defensive intensity as the Blues began to struggle going forward. Their open forward line, and some weak frees, gradually saw them manage the ascendancy. The luck shifted with the ball bouncing their way and more injuries to the Blues through Dale Thomas (head knock).

The third was all Dockers as the Blues continually found purple targets going forward. The mids in Gibbs and Kruezer were gallant and trying, but we just could not find a forward.

Perhaps our bad day (after quarter time) was best characterised by a Freo goal from a free with a minute to go. Marchbank was in the superior position in a tussle with Taberner - Marchbank had his eyes on the ball, had won the battle of strength, and Taberner was defeated. Both players had firm grabs of the opposition jumper. Our fate being so, meant that Taberner got the free notwithstanding a huge chunk of Blue Guernsey in his hand, right in front of the umpire. Another goal, the margin exacerbated, and a Carlton team who'd shown so much promise left scratching their heads about so many unusual umpiring decisions and so many failed 50 entries cut off by the Dockers. We'd been beaten comfortably.
