Game Review

This game was a hard fought struggle for both teams, with Fitzroy taking it up to Carlton. Fitzroy actually held a half-time lead, and while the Blues had the better of the third quarter, the Lions came at us early in the last quarter. Our lead would be reduced to 4 points late in the last term, but a late goal would seal the victory for Carlton.

Poor kicking throughout the game by the Blues had enabled Fitzroy to stay in touch, and the win should have been more comfortable. Carlton would advance to its second consecutive Grand Final with a chance to defend the premiership it had won the previous year.

"The largest assemblage of the season, over 30,000 people, witnessed the semi-final League match at the Melbourne cricket ground last Saturday. It was a great contest, in which the fortunes of the game and the merit in play fluctuated until right into the final quarter. Then Carlton had more in reserve; not that they had been particularly resourceful, but the players are built on lines in which nature, in the truly trained man, applies its own restoratives quickly.

Fitzroy, too, can boast of such men, but not in the similar numbers, and in the final stage of the hardest fought match of the season quite a number of them was palpably tired. There was an equality in the standard of the football shown. It was a kind that thrills, hard knocks were given and taken, but only on rare occassions had the umpire to intervene to curb the spirit of relatiation that manifested itself. - (Queensland Times September 18)
