Game Review

This was the defining game of the season for the Navy Blues. To keep our finals hopes alive, we simply had to beat the sixth-placed Demons on our home turf, but we weren't up to the mark.
The task wasn't made any easier by the absence of our captain; John Nicholls, and key defender Wes Lofts - both on duty with the Victorian state team, and in the end, their absence was crucial. Melbourne's rucks got on top after half-time, and their captain Ron Barassi was dominant as the Demons won by a comfortable five goals.
Melbourne's victory lifted them into the top four at the expense of an inconsistent St Kilda, who lost to Footscray at the Junction Oval. After ten rounds, the top four clubs were Essendon, Geelong, Hawthorn and Melbourne. The Blues were seventh - equal on points with Melbourne, but a massive 20% in arrears.

Trevor Best

"The match looked like developing into a "football gem" in the first five minutes when four goals were kicked - and it could easily have been five.
Those first few minutes were a real "first" for former Tasmanian rover Trevor Best ... in his first game with the Blues he got one of the first kicks of the game and helped Carlton to the first goal." (Age July 01)
