Game Review

"At Victoria Park, Collingwood were shaking hands with themselves at half time, but unfortunately their hopes of a signal victory were foredoomed to vanish into thin air. The home team gained a lead of three points - 3.2 to 2.5 - in the first term, and at the interval had an advantage of no less than 21 points - 6.4 to 2.7.
It must be admitted that there was sufficient cause for self-congratulation amongst the leaders for the time being. This was the fourth meeting, and three times already had Collingwood gone down before the mighty. Joy, therefore, reigned in the Magpie camp.
Shortly after the resumption of hostilities the scene was abruptly changed, or rather, the aspect of it. A few years ago, in the palmy days of such gallants as Jim Flynn, Pompey Elliott, Mallee Johnson, George Bruce, Bongo Lang, Fred Jinks and others, Carlton's third quarter was a nightmare to opponents and a joyful vision to their supporters.
On one occasion, when South Melbourne were beating the Dark Blues in every position of the field, the same old third quarter eruption eventuated, and Carlton added nine goals in ten minutes, with a high class South Melbourne combination literally standing and looking on at the prodigious and unprecedented performance.
The triumphs of the heroes of the past were recalled on Saturday, when the Dark Blues added six goals in eight minutes in a similar purple patch. For the moment Collingwood were paralysed as Carlton assumed the lead. But the well-disciplined Magpies did not falter for long, and they got to work with a will., and put up another three goals, which gave them the call by a point - 9.7 to 8.12.
The finish was magnificently fought out, though Carlton had somewhat the better of the actual play. Collingwood however, led to within three minutes of time, but the sturdy and talented Carlton rover, Valentine, then found the opening between the big sticks. With an advantage of three points, the Dark Blue skipper packed his men on the ball, and succeeded in preventing Collingwood from doing damage. The interest was maintained to the end, and Carlton won a spectacular contest by two points - 9.18 to 10.10"

"The speedy Brown, who is now a soldier in camp, was somewhat crude in his methods last season, but in marking he has improved "out of sight," and he also handles the ball much better. His dash is of the finest, and his grand defence was the feature of the game.
The muscular and active young giant, Fisher, was good second, and his mighty kicks were greatly in evidence. "Billy" Dick was the same old snag at half-back, and others who did well were McGregor, O'Brien, Sharp, Hammond, Shortell, and Jamieson."
(Referee July 29 p6)
Viv Valentine scored his 32nd. goal for the season.

At the end of this round Carlton were in 1st spot on the ladder with a percentage of 138.4.
