Game Review

This close, hard-fought win over Same Old Essendon lifted Carlton into second spot when South Melbourne lost to Fitzroy at the Lake Oval.

Carlton's position was pivotal in a fixture utilising the ‘Sectional’ regime of game allocation. With 8 sides, each team played the other twice through the regular season. The results of these rounds would determine the order of the final three ‘Sectionals,’ in which first would play 3rd, 5th and 7th, and second would play 4th, 6th and 8th in the last three rounds of 1904.

By finishing runners-up, the Blues not only avoided top-ranked Fitzroy, but managed to pick up a game against eighth-placed St Kilda. More and more, Carlton was looking like a serious Premiership contender.
