Game Review

Last-placed Essendon refused to be overwhelmed in the first half of this match at Princes Park, and trailed the Blues by only three points at the main break. But a dominant second half by the Blues – during which they rattled on 7.15 to 2.5 – set up a 43-point win.

Carlton announced five changes to the side that lost to Geelong the previous week. Davey and Clarke were in Sydney with the Victorian team at the football carnival, and Huxtable and Martyn could not be considered through injury. Leffanue was omitted. Into the side came skipper Frank Gill, back from his eight week suspension, Vallence, recovered from injury, and Pollock. Steve Bloomer and Ray Quinn would make their debuts for the Blues.

Essendon were first into attack after play commenced with a behind the result. Play was very rough from the opening, with both sides hard at the ball and man. Kelly relieved one Essendon attack with a great run along the wing. Carlton’s first goal came after a snap from Vallence bounced through an unguarded goal. Essendon, doing well when play was opened up and in the ruck, replied with their first shortly after. Crisp and Shea were playing well for Carlton and Vallence and Crisp both goaled to give Carlton the lead. Carlton now were in control and goals to Crisp, on the run and to Pollock, from a free kick right in front, established a handy lead. Late goals to Essendon brought their deficit to 13 points at quarter time.

Essendon opened the second term with a goal after some persistent work along one wing. Crisp was setting up numerous attacks and a goal to Downs was the result of one such attack. Play was still vigorous, but Carlton were crowding the play, forcing Essendon into errors. Vallence scored the seventh goal with a nice snap and it looked like Carlton would run away with the game. But Essendon suddenly came to life and scored the last three goals of the quarter to trail by only three point at the main break. Mocha Johnson’s long kicking had been a highlight of the first half.

Egan commenced the second half with a place kick at goal, but the shot was poor and Essendon relieved easily. Mackie was superb in defence, with Park and Crowe in support, and Essendon could not get past him. A doubtful free to Quinn provided his first goal and Carlton’s eighth. Essendon fans were incensed at some of the free kicks being awarded to Carlton in this term. Vallence scored the ninth and tenth goals for the Blues and the lead increased to twenty points at the last change.

Essendon began the last quarter attacking at goal but Mackie repelled again. Carlton was relentless in attack in the final term and were scoring almost at will. Vallence marked to kick his sixth goal and a goal to Crisp at the ten minute mark made the game safe. Gill’s lack of match fitness saw him cramping late in the game and he was replaced by Street. Carlton eased up towards the end of the quarter and after two further goals to Crisp, both sides were content to let the game play out. Carlton had been wasteful in this term, kicking 4-8. Had they kicked more accurately, the result would have been assured much earlier. Vallence, with 6-8 and Shea with four behinds only, were the main culprits. Although Essendon had tried hard, Carlton had been well in control from half time onwards.

Best on Ground for the Blues was Gordon Mackie, who continued his fine season with another outstanding game at centre half-back. Half-forward flankers Keith Shea and Mick Crisp (who kicked 5 goals) were brilliant after half-time, while ‘Soapy’ Vallence had another productive day at full-forward and finished with 6 majors.

Over at Victoria Park, Collingwood produced an upset by beating top side Richmond, while all other matches finished as predicted. Geelong assumed ladder leadership, ahead of Richmond, Carlton and Fitzroy. South Melbourne remained fifth, two points outside the four, with a healthy percentage.

At the end of this round Carlton were in 3rd spot on the ladder with a percentage of 108.7
