Game Review

"With a full quarter of an hour still to play and 18 points to make up, Carlton had still a good chance, but Essendon made a brilliant rally against the wind, and Busbridge created a sensation by kicking a goal - the first points scored at the pavilion end since the commencement of the game. Shortly after Lang was awarded a free kick, and despite his lameness he added another goal for Carlton; but Fraser settled the visitor's chance by most foolishly pushing O'Connor behind when the latter was close to Carlton's goal and straight in front of it. O'Connor, being awarded a free kick, had no difficulty in scoring 6 points, and although Carlton subsequently prevailed, and Clark and Clancy each kicked a goal, Essendon were 8 points up when the final bell rang." (The Age: 22nd August 1910)

Essendon maintained their status as the only side to have beaten Carlton in 1910 when they triumphed by 8 points in front of a huge crowd of around 20,000 on this wind-swept Saturday afternoon at the East Melbourne Cricket Ground. During the week prior, Carlton lost George Bruce and Percy Sheehan to injury, replacing them with Bill Goddard and Reuben Holland. Star rover Alex Lang was passed fit to play, so Claude Cornish made way for him – but Lang broke down again in the first few minutes of the game. Although he remained on the field, hobbling around in a forward pocket, his influence around the packs was sorely missed.

Unfortunately for all concerned, the stiff breeze blowing down the ground from pocket to pocket made scoring against it nearly impossible. The Dons won the toss and seemed to have squandered a big opportunity when they posted 2.7 to Carlton’s no score at the first break, however, the Blues fared little better when their opportunity came. The visitors kept Essendon scoreless for the quarter as well, but at half-time Carlton were just four points ahead.

The Dons used the wind better at their second opportunity after half-time, kicking 2.4 with the breeze to head into the last term 26 points in front. It was then that that the events described above occurred, and the home side held the Blues at bay to win by 8 points and cement their position at second on the ladder.

Best players for Carlton on a confidence-sapping day were Marchbank, Clancy, McGregor, Baquie, Clark and Jamieson.

At the end of this round Carlton were in 1st spot on the ladder with a percentage of 166.8.
