Game Review

''Kernahan Vs Cats
Stephen Kernahan took on the Cats at Kardinia Park and won. The other Carlton players were simply there to make up the numbers. The Blues captain scooped the stats pool with 15 kicks, 13 marks, five handballs and eight goals. He probably drove the bus home as well. Carlton were supreme in every facet of the game: the boys in blue had 48 more kicks, eight more handballs, 14 more hit-outs and six more effective tackles. The Premiership Grail appears to be concentrating their minds wonderfully. A few Carlton players gained a swag of possessions on the day: David Glascott had 29 (17 & 12), Wayne Johnston had 26 (19 & 7), Ken Hunter had 21 (13 & 8) and Tom Alvin had 21 (19 & 2). - Footy Week.''

''Pussies were gobbled up
Stephen Kernahan, Peter Sartori and Justin Madden took on the appearance of three menacing Great White Sharks on Saturday. Everywhere they went they gobbled up the feeble Pussies in a manner which was positively ruthless. In fact, the whole side has taken on a new complexion in the past two weeks. Since the scratchy effort against Essendon, we have steamrolled the Swans and Geelong and September glory appears well and truly within our grasp. But everyone at Carlton must remember what happened last year. There is no point striving for the ultimate goal if you are going to let yourself down in the big one and every player should be constantly reminded of last year's abysmal Grand Final effort. I have no doubt that they are tuned in properly though. They have been more thorough in disposing of the poor sides and have gone on with the job in latter stages of matches better than I can recall. On Saturday we had to endure sniping, angry young footballers and we received very little protection from the umpires. That doesn't worry me, I am sure the players can live with it, but when you see Jon Dorotich thumped with a round-arm and not have the offender booked, especially when you compare it the Ken Hunter incident, which is the biggest joke ever, there really seems to be something wrong. But rather than let those cowardly things bother us, we took the bit between the teeth and thumped Geelong, all but putting it out of this year's race for the finals. The Cats were pretenders anyway. - Carl Toner Inside Football.''

Carlton's Justin Madden played an outstanding game against Geelong on Saturday. He completely dominated the centre bounces and gave his little men an armchair ride all day. One part of his game often maligned, was excellent and his all round performance was of the highest calibre. At one stage of the afternoon he looked like Tarzan. He was involved in a skirmish and had his jumper half ripped from his body. He looked like the King of Kardinia Park. The fact that Bourke was out of the Geelong side obviously made it easier on him as Bourke had had the better of Madden in the past encounters. He had to take plenty all match, but he was never distracted from the ball. Well done Justin, you were clearly the outstanding player of the match. - Ted Whitten Inside Football.

I must congratulate fellow captain, Carlton's Stephen Kernahan on a fantastic effort at Geelong last weekend. The Blues had been knocked off by the Cats at Kardinia Park in 1986 but Kernahan's eight goals really made a difference in what had shaped as a very competitive game early. Kernahan had multiple opponents and marked everything that came his way. Carlton is now in the box seat to qualify first and have a week's rest in September. Their match committee have the tough problem of having to fit 25 - 26 good players into their finals squad. There are going to be a few disappointed boys, so I'm sure everyone at Princes Park will be going flat out in the next fortnight to ensure their places for September. - Tony Shaw Inside Football.

''Ruthless Blues in "best shape".
Carlton coach Robert Walls after his normal unemotional self after the Blues crushing 68 point victory over Geelong at Kardinia Park on Saturday. But make no mistake, the cagey Blues mentor was happy - very happy. The Blues had played brilliantly and with the arrogant authority of a ruthless side on a single-minded mission. This, no doubt is what satisfied Walls most. At a similar stage last season Carlton made the journey down the Geelong road to face a struggling Cats combination, were a little lax and paid the penalty. Geelong threw everything at Carlton early and there was plenty of aggression but the visitors were too tall, too skilled and just too accomplished. "It was pleasing to win by 11 or 12 goals in a physical game" Walls added. "And it was Geelong", he added emphatically - underlining the merit he placed on the win. Walls acknowledged his team of professionals were doing everything right at the moment and the pressure was on everyone to maintain their place within the senior team. "We are in the best shape we have been for a while with almost a full list to choose from", he said. "There is half a dozen in the Reserves who are capable of playing in the senior team. And you cannot put 26 into 20, so it is good all round". Walls said the Blues were a tighter knit team this season than in 1986. "There were more new faces around the club last season. I was new and we had several new recruits, so it is only natural that we would be a lot closer now". - Footy Week.''
