Game Review
The Blues came out firing early and kicked the first two goals of the game through Nick Stevens and Cameron Cloke but the Lions recovered to kick the next two and at the 9 minute mark of the first quarter, this was already promising to be a great game between two sides just out of the eight. Carlton then powered on to kick the next three through Cloke and Ryan Houlihan (2), who had got off to a blistering start in his first game back from hip surgery since Round 3 ended with 3 goals for the first term. Carlton got out to a good lead and were up by 22 points at the first break, with 7 goals 2 a welcome change from some of the inaccurate scores they'd registered earlier in the season.Brisbane kicked the first 2 goals of the second quarter before Brad Fisher steadied the boat for the Blues with 3 consecutive goals in the space of 6 minutes. Carlton managed to hold onto their lead and went into the main break 18 points in front.
The third quarter well and truly belonged to the Lions, who blew away the Blues and looked as if they had the game sewn up. They kicked 9 goals 3 and Carlton only had the one goal, courtesy of Andrew Walker. How Fevola must to have wondered how he don’t receive free kicks when compared to some of the ‘easy’ frees that Brisbane’s Bradshaw received during this third quarter.
The Blues went into the final quarter 32 points behind and with a formidable task ahead of them. But given their amazing record this year, if anyone was going to win from here it would be the Blues. 2 minutes in, Brendan Fevola kicked his 2nd and final goal of the game to take his season tally to 92 and give the Blues the boost they needed to win the game. The Blues then piled on another 4 goals and when Jarrad Waite kicked the final goal of the game, it ensured Carlton would register its greatest ever comeback from a deficit at three-quarter time (32 points). In a remarkable quarter, the Blues slammed home 6 goals 3 and kept the Lions to a solitary behind to end any hope they had of playing in September. It was the fourth time during the Lions last eight games that they have been overrun to be defeat by 8 points or less.
This was Carlton's first win over Brisbane since Round 8, 2001, snapping an 8 game losing streak, Brisbane's best effort against Carlton. It was also the first win for the Blues at the GABBA since Round 16, 2000.
Captain Chris Judd was best afield with 33 disposals, 14 contested possessions, 6 clearances, 6 tackles and 3 assists. His deputy Nick Stevens was the leading ball-winner with 35 disposals, 4 clearances, 12 inside 50s and a goal while former No.1 draft pick Marc Murphy was very influential with 27 disposals, 10 contested possessions, 4 clearances and 2 goals (the latter a very crucial one). Cameron Cloke was also very handy, chipping in with 4 goals while playing predominantly in the forward line - plus he brought up his first Brownlow Vote in Carlton colours. This was his best return for Carlton beating his previous best of 3 goals also against Brisbane in Round 5, 2007 at the Dome.
Carlton made two late changes for this match with Michael Jamison being ill and Steven Browne being rested replaced by Joe Anderson and Adam Bentick.
With this crowd at the Gabba being 34,327 and has now pushed Carlton’s yearly crowd to over a million for the first time in our history and now stands at 1,021,443 at an average of 48,640 per match with the big match against the Hawks at the Dome next week.
