Game Review

The Blues had "pinched" the 1947 flag from the Bombers with a last-minute snap goal from Fred Stafford. This game presented Essendon with a chance for some meagre revenge.

The Blues were struggling for form entering the match (at 2-3) whilst the Bombers had compiled 4 wins, and a draw with the Tigers in round 5. Carlton welcomed back star full-forward Ken Baxter for his first appearance of 1948. Baxter didn't disappoint, dobbing 6 majors (including all 5 Carlton scored to half-time)but little else went right.

Essendon gained a slight quarter-time advantage, sprinted away in the second stanza, maintained their advantage through the third and were never really threatened in the last. The Blues couldn't contain the stellar Essondon roving division of Dick Reynolds and Bill Hutchinson.

The Premiership defence was looking decidly shaky...
