Game Review

Stung by defeat the previous week, Jack Worrall’s Blues showed last-placed Melbourne little mercy on their home turf on this Saturday afternoon, and beat the Fuchsias by 45 points. Had the ground been dry (instead of sodden by days of rain) the margin would certainly have been greater.

Two future Premiership stars in Fred Jinks and Les Beck – as well as two-gamer Andy Kennedy – began their careers with Carlton this day. All four VFL matches in the round were played on wet grounds, and although scores were unusually low, there were no upsets. By beating Melbourne, the Blues retained their ascendancy on top of the ladder, one win ahead of Essendon, Collingwood, Fitzroy and South Melbourne.

An interesting sidelight to this match involved Carlton’s veteran captain Jim Flynn, who racked up his 50th game for Carlton and set a record as the oldest Blue to achieve this feat. Still standing more than 100 years later, Flynn’s record will surely never be broken.

At the end of this round Carlton were in 1st spot on the ladder with a percentage of 153.0.
