Game Review

Despite an even beginning, Carlton ran away with this match owing to a strong double-team of Schmidt and Wrout who would kick 12 between them.

Lance Colins scored the first goal. The Blues were winning in the ruck but they wasted opportunities on the forward line by the over use of handball. George Bailey and Arthur Sanger working hard repelled the Saints' attacks. St.Kilda were playing more direct and a clever snap equalized the scores. The Blues were then on the defensive when St.Kilda added another goal. Good work by Bert Deacon playing direct football bought Jim Knight into the play and he kicked the Blues second. Bert Deacon again stood out and his long kick to Paul Schmidt enabled the forward pocket to kick his team's third. However, the Saints bounced one through to even the scores just before quarter time at 3.4 apiece.
St.Kilda hit the scoreboard early on and added a major. The Blues repeatedly attacked but they were easily swept aside by the Saints' back men. It was a battle of the back lines until Paul Schmidt snapped a goal. Fred Fitzgibbon was playing well on the wing. The Saints scored another goal but soon after Paul Schmidt added another for Carlton. With time running out for the quarter, Schmidt and Jim Mooring added two quick goals to give the Blues a 15 point lead at the main break. 7.8 - 5.5
St.Kilda attacked repeatedly for 10 minutes but could only manage 1.1 Then Deacon with another lovely kick to Schmidt and he added to the Blues goal tally. George Bailey passed to Jack Wrout whose great kick added another. The Saints replied with a goal, but then Jim Mooring added another goal. The Blues then pounced and Schmidt and Wrout each added goals. Mooring passed the ball to Schmidt and he added his seventh goal and the thirteenth for the Blues. Fitzgibbon was dominating his wing and drove the Blues into attack time and again. At three quarter time Carlton held a 37 point lead. 13.9 - 7.8
Once again St.Kilda were out of the blocks early and this time they scored two quick goals. Playing direct football the Blues attacked and Wrout on his left hooked the ball through the goals. Then Lance Collins snapped another and the margin was restored. Into attack once again and Wrout marked strongly close in and added the third goal for the term and Blues led by 44 points. St. Kilda then reduced the margin by a goal, but Wrout again with a good mark, scored the replying goal. The visitors were tiring. Schmidt added another to finish with 8* goals, and Blues ran out easy winners by 51 points. 18.14 - 10.11

At the end of this round Carlton were in 6th spot on the ladder with a percentage of 105.0.

Perc Bentley - War Time Difficulties

Wednesday's Sporting Globe (p12)
"Complimenting Percy Bentley coach on the excellent showing of Carlton in recent weeks. I learned that he is battling against great difficulties in that he cannot get than more than a dozen players and reserves at the two practice nights. Last week he had two in attendance on Tuesday night and six on Thursday."
