1969 Summary

A major rule change introduced. A free kick will now be paid against the team kicking the ball out of bounds on the full.

Three consecutive wins started our premiership defence, with Carlton handing Hawthorn a 128 point spanking in round 2. Round 4 saw the Blues first loss of the season, Collingwood kicking an amazing 12 goals in the third quarter to beat Carlton by 64 points. Another defeat in round 6 at the hands of Geelong would see the club sitting in fourth on the ladder.

Carlton really hit its stride between round 7 and 16, winning 10 games straight to be three games clear on top of the ladder. Unfortunately the Blues would lose the next three games, to Geelong, Melbourne, and Richmond and Collingwood won three games over the same period to displace the Blues from the top of the ladder. A win in the final home and away round against Essendon saw the club finish in second spot, with only percentage between the team and top spot.

Carlton and Collingwood would meet in the second Semi Final for a place in the Grand Final, and after a tight first half the Blues kicked 6 goals to 1 in the third quarter to ice the match. Collingwood would meet Richmond in the Preliminary Final, with the Tigers winning the right to play us in the Grand Final. Richmond would jump to a 22 point half time lead, but the Blues fought back in the third term, kicking 6 goals to 2 to take a four point lead into the 3rd quarter break. Carlton were held goalless in the final term, the Tigers winning 12.13 (85) to 8.12 (60).

While falling short of the flag, the Blues went on to play in their third Grand Final in a row in 1970, picking up their second premiership in three years.
