Game Review
The opening pre-season match of 1990 was between the arch-rivals and, 20 minutes into the third term, was still an even affair with the Blues a single goal in the lead. But then a devastating 20 minute patch of Carlton football saw that lead blow out to 40 points, snuffing the Magpies out of the game.
Craig Bradley and
Wayne Johnston in particular were in devastating form, while
Jon Dorotich dominated Gayfer up forward and
Kernahan kicked four in a far more even duel with Craig Kelly. The backline - in particular
Da Rui,
Blackwell,
Rhys-Jones and newcomer
Stephen Edgar - performed as a tight unit all evening.
The Blues won this encounter, 109 to 82, with veteran Wayne Johnston in devastating form, kicking four goals from 17 kicks. Skipper Stephen Kernahan also kicked four goals, while Jon Dorotich and Fraser Murphy kicked three apiece. Collingwood struggled for most of the night, although champion on-ball player Peter Daicos had more than 30 touches and a lively display from new recruit Tony Francis. Football Life.

Game Review
Carlton dominated early and if not for inaccurate kicking could have been well in control. But from then on the Swans, led brilliantly by Gerard Healy, never let up and it became a low-scoring, but intriguing affair with neither side giving an inch. When a Matthew Ryan goal put the Swans three points ahead with as many minutes to go, the game looked over. But
Fraser Brown slotted a major from 25 metres out and two desperate, late charges from the Swans resulted in only behinds. Carlton home by a solitary point.
The Blues went into the game without
Rhys-Jones,
Bradley,
Dean and
Naley. In their absence
Alvin,
Da Rui (20 kicks each) and
Silvagni all put in sterling efforts.
Wayne Johnston was also in vintage form, except he could not kick straight - his return for the night was 0.7!

Game Review
North Melbourne kicked the opening six goals in an explosive opening to the Fosters Cup Semi-Final. The Blues were able to close the match up, however, and by quarter-time had pegged back a couple of majors. They then totally took control in the second quarter and by half-time had remarkably turned around a 38 point deficit to hold a slight advantage. North were to provide the fiercer attack at the ball from then on however and ran out deserved 28 point winners. Despite the loss, the pre-season series provided coach
Alex Jesaulenko with plenty of positives for the upcoming season after the disappointments of season
1989.
