Patterson played 5 games for Carlton after debuting in 1897. Patterson was born in Learmouth, and was recruited from Rainbow via Carlton's VFA team.

There were two or three players named Patterson in the 1890's
Patterson was named in 1893, 1894, 1895 & 1896 teams. (Possibly 73 games)
Another Patterson who was said to be the other's brother, was named in 1895 & 1896. (Possibly 26 games)
A player named J. Patterson (a misprint?) kicked a goal in 1895.

Volume 5 of "Origins of Australian Football" (p54) has William Arthur 'Bill' Patterson playing from 1893 - 1898.
Bill's senior debut was May 09 1896 v Essendon on the East Melbourne C. G. age 22 years 239 days.
He played 69 VFA plus 5 VFL games for a total of 74. He scored 1 goal in 1896.
