Like Jack Douglas and Jim Balharry, Fred Barlow played a single game for Carlton in Season 1898. Barlow also played for South Melbourne in their VFA days and joined Carlton from Ascot Vale. He was born in Sandridge (Port Melbourne). In 1898 Barlow was granted a permit to Fitzroy Crescent from Carlton.

Barlow passed away on the 20th February, 1948 aged 75.

The Record (Emerald Hill) May 21 p3 1898 said the League had granted a permit for "Barlow, South Melbourne to Carlton."
