Although he was christened Hector William Evans at his birth in 1879, history has recorded him as Harry Evans; the first of two Blues to carry that name. Raised in Shepparton, and recruited by Carlton from Rutherglen, Harry pulled on his boots in eight matches over two interrupted seasons – only to be on the losing side in all of them.

The nearest Harry came to a victory was in his debut match against the reigning Premiers Fitzroy, at Brunswick Street Oval in August, 1899. He did well in the centre that day, while Carlton fell agonisingly short of victory by one point. From then on, it was all downhill for the Blues, as the club endured the least-successful period in our history.

Harry didn’t play at all in 1900, but returned for six more games as a forward the following year. His VFL career concluded with a 13-point loss to South Melbourne at Princes Park in August, 1901.

Evans injured his knee in his second match, Round 16, 1899, this prevented him playing in the last match of 1899.
