Women’s senior coach Damien Keeping said Hicks is the ultimate “task-orientated” player. “If you give Reni a job, she’ll get straight to it,” Keeping said. “She can play shutdown roles on smalls or talls, while also winning her own ball at the same time.” “She’s going to be able to grow into a player that can play down back, but we believed that she’s got an opportunity to become a really quality midfielder.”

Former Bendigo Thunder player Reni Hicks, who was drafted to Carlton with pick 29. From Rugby Sevens to Aussie Rules, Hicks sports bag of tricks.
RENI Hicks knows how to handle a football — and a rugby ball, netball, and even a horse, for that matter. The 17-year-old from Nathalia become a state representative in two sports last year and made national selection in one of those. Reni went to Wagga Wagga last month to represent Victoria in a youth girls rugby team in the Australian Sevens Development Tournament. That followed her appearance in May at the AFL Youth Girls National Championships, where she represented Vic Country, and was named in the All-Australian side. One of her coaches, Sam Ahmet, describes her as a player who rises to the occasion each time a new challenge is put in front of her. She also plays netball and competes in camp drafting, but don’t ask her to try to pick her favourite because “it’s a tough one”, Reni says. “I want to try and get to the highest level I can — with what sport I’m not too sure at the moment.” With an elite women’s national competition to start in 2017, Reni says her best path looks like Aussie rules. “All the boys say, ‘I want to be an AFL footballer when I grow up’,” she said. “Now we can aspire to that as well.” Reni played Auskick then one year of junior football with boys. Girls can only play in mixed-gender teams up to 14. A youth girls pathway developed in the region and Reni played for Mooroopna then Kyabram for the past four seasons. She joined the youth girls academy run by AFL Goulburn Murray and TAC Cup sides Murray Bushrangers and Bendigo Pioneers. Sam, the academy coach who was also an assistant coach with the Vic Country youth girls side, says she was one of the last picked in the state side, but earned her stripes in the backline group he oversaw. Reni said she was excited to gain All-Australian selection as she had not expected to make the Vic Country side. “I just gave it my all because I didn’t know if that would be my last chance to play Vic Country and I wanted to prove I deserved to be in the team.” Reni plans to continue playing netball and rugby next year, and hopes to join the Bendigo Thunder women's football team. She was named this month in the initial Victoria Country youth girls squad for the national championships in Melbourne in May. - HANNAH DRISCOLL, The Weekly Times.
