Saturday's Herald article on the start of the season, in part, says;
"The 'oldsters' look back with perhaps a sigh of regret that in the hey-day of their enjoyment of invigorating sport, whether as players or spectators, they had not the comforts and conveniences that are now accorded to competitors and watchers.
Then it was hard, gravelly grounds and roped arena, and no accomodation whatever for the lookers-on, save the privilege of standing on a bare and often rugged field, without parting with 'gate money.'
Still, they remember that the game then was as spirtedly and as well played then as now, and they are satisfied and pleased to find that times have improved for all who love the game.
They wish them a pleasant and successful season, as 'The Herald' does."

Game Review

After a threatening morning the sun came out, and a large crowd gathered to see the new-look Blues take on last year's premiers. The visitors started well, but their game plan soon broke down through the ruck dominance and the vigor and dash of the Carlton team. "Joe McShane and Flynn, both of whom made their reputations in Geelong, but shifted to Carlton - were altogether too good in the ruck, and with their such height, weight, and resourcefulness as they possess, they should always be disconcerting to opposing followers. Another who was tried with marked success on the ball was Elliott,and if this players' form lasts, he will be a star. In securing the services of Trim, the half back man from South Melbourne, Carlton were decidedly fortunate. He played very finely in defence. Sullivan for the Dark Blues, scored four goals." (Referee May 06)

With no less than five new faces in the team, Carlton began season 1903 with a sensational victory over the reigning Premiers Collingwood at Princes Park. Captain Joe McShane in the ruck, vice-captain Ernie Walton at centre half-back, and clever forwards Sullivan and Webber set up the triumph in Carlton’s 100th VFL game.

But after beginning the year with a bang, Carlton would have to wait until the round 3 fixture before playing again, because our round 2 match was postponed. For more on this event, please click here.
