Game Review

Carlton began the 1934 season in style by disposing of the Hawks by a clean eight goals, but the margin definitely should have been greater, because the Blues had 43 shots at goal, to the Mayblooms' 20. Carlton rover Ansell Clarke kicked 5 majors, and brilliant flanker Keith Shea bagged four.

At training on the Thursday night, the emphasis was on sprints and long kicking. Several players seemed to have gained some yards over the break and the side looked fast. Davey would be available, having recovered from a lacerated hand, but Mackie’s ankle would keep him out of the opening game. Also unavailable were two recruits, Churchland and Vaughan, both for whom Carlton had high expectations. Harold Maskell was named in the back pocket for his first game after transferring from Collingwood. Maurie Johnson was elected captain with Charlie Davey his deputy.

Play was congested in the middle of the ground for several minutes after the opening bounce. After finally breaking clear, a Carlton attack was repelled close to goal, but from the rebound, Kelly kicked to Vallence, who marked but could only manage a behind. From a chain of passes, Hawthorn got the ball to Jack Green, (the former Carlton player who had transferred to the Mayblooms during the week), who snapped the opening goal. A follow up Hawthorn goal came shortly after, from a long kick. And after great work around the centre, a running goal meant the impetus was all with Hawthorn. Carlton seemed sluggish and when they did attack, the terrible inaccuracy of the previous seasons was still there, Carlton hitting the post twice. There seemed to be no organisation when the Blues did go into attack. In a tight scrimmage on the wing, a Hawthorn player was accidently knocked out and was carried off on a stretcher. A promising attack resulted in a great mark to Crisp close to goal, and the first Carlton goal. Hawthorn’s solid defence and sparking play around the centre were the reasons for a handy nine point lead at quarter time.

Clarke outpaced three Hawthorn defenders to score a running goal when play recommenced. Several more attacks were wasted when only behinds were scored, which levelled the scores. Shea scored Carlton’s second for the term with a long kick from near the centre, but Jack Green answered for Hawthorn with a fine goal from 40 yards out. Hawthorn’s attacks continued and after a behind, their fifth goal was scored following the kick-in. Due to Hawthorn’s strong defence, Carlton could manage only behinds until Pollock received a free close to goal and kicked the fourth goal for the Blues. When Hawthorn attacked, their play was smart and co-ordinated and two more goals came before the bell sounded for half time. They were clearly the better side of the first half and deserved their ten point lead.

A different Carlton emerged after the break. Gone was the sluggish and indirect play of the first half, and the Blues promptly gained the upper hand, through better kicking and the free use of weight where needed. Persistent early attacks resulted in the fifth goal, kicked by Clarke. Jack Green replied for the Mayblooms to restore the margin before Clarke set the game alight with two quick goals; the first from a snap and the second from an angle shot from a long way out. He missed an easy shot just minutes later when he kicked a behind, running into an open goal. Carlton kept play in their forward zone for the next five minutes, from which Crowe scored a rare goal. Another attack and some clever passing gave Crowe his second goal, and four in a row for the Blues. A Hawthorn fightback and two goals from Jack Green got the scores close again, but the rally was answered with two Carlton goals to Shea and Crisp. A goal to Hawthorn on the three quarter time bell meant the Blues led by 14 points at the final change.

Vallence, with an injured thigh, was replaced by Jack Cooper at three quarter time. Pollock went to full forward and J. Cooper to the half back flank. Two easy misses from Hawthorn seemed to deflate their confidence and from then it was all Carlton. Pollock missed an easy shot from a free in front. Kelly was prominent with some good play and fine passes. A chain of passes between Crowe, Shea and Pollock came unstuck, but Crisp recovered for Carlton’s twelfth goal. Carlton, now much quicker than Hawthorn, added further goals through Jack Cooper, Hughson and Clarke to increase the lead before Crisp and Jack Cooper scored late goals. Hawthorn’s only goal for the quarter came right on the final bell to make it a 48 point victory for Carlton. The brilliant recovery after half time was blighted only by the inaccurate goal kicking, with 6-8 scored in the last quarter. Pollock in particular was very wasteful, kicking 1-6 for the game.

At the end of this round Carlton were in 1st spot on the ladder with a percentage of 160.0.
