Game Review

B. Williams replaced B.Arch (jarred thumb) in selected side.

Already facing an uphill task against third-placed St Kilda, the Blues emerged from a tough week on the training track to face the Saints without their two first-choice ruckmen in Graham Donaldson and John Nicholls - who were both out injured. On a bleak Saturday afternoon in the rain at Princes Park, Maurie Sankey and Max Miers stepped into the breach, and led a committed Carlton combination to a much-needed win.

Although this was Carlton's first victory in six matches, remarkably, the Blues were still in finals contention - sitting eighth, but only four points behind the fourth-placed Saints. Although Tom Carroll kicked only one goal for the game, he remained in second spot on the goal-kicking table with 31 majors - three behind the leader, Doug Wade of Geelong.

Don Nicholls, older brother of future Carlton legend John, played his last game for the Navy Blues on this day.
