Game Review

Carlton made it two wins in a row on the back of an impressive 5 goals to 2 last quarter comeback against Hawthorn at Princes Park, and rose to 8th on the ladder with a percentage of 91.9 after 13 rounds.

G. Kerr and Molony were selected, as Johnny James was with the State team and Moran was omitted.

In the first half the Blues looked anything but winners. Their ball handling was inept, and the players seemed to be stuck in the mud which covered most of Princes Park. Hawthorn scored 4 goals in the first 10 minutes of the first quarter and looked the goods. "If it had not been for courageous dashes and long kicks from half back John Brown, safe marking by Peter Webster, and the tigerish work of Bruce Comben, both in back pockets, Carlton would have been swamped completely in the first quarter."

After half time the Blues gradually improved and their rucks got on top. "When it settled down it won almost everywhere with ruckmen and rovers dominant, half forwards showing pace and cleverness, and "Nobby" O'Brien, full forward, handling the greasy ball with remarkable skill."

The Blues played their best football in the last quarter where they kicked 5.5 to 1 behind, before the Hawks booted 2 late goals to flatter their score. Beasy and Chick played well providing many opportunites for their team mates.

Carlton coach Perc Bentley

"I am a pleased man now that we have won this game, because when Hawthorn got the breaks and gained an early lead we were set the task of catching up. But we were a little faster, and gradually took command. Our rucks played a big part in that recovery, and gave our forwards the opportunites we were seeking. The ruckmen did not handle the ball well in the early stages, and that contributed to the early success of Hawthorn. At the finish our condition pulled us through, and I thought our fellows combined especially well in that vital last quarter."
