Game Review

Carlton's first season in the VFL would come to a disappointing end with this five-goal loss to Collingwood, who would go on to play in the round-robin Semi Finals and finish up 3rd. The Argus reported the game under the headline "Against long odds":

"Although Carlton failed to beat Collingwood, they played a fast and plucky game against great odds in weight and height. This enabled the home men to shine in high marking, while their system of passing was so much superior to Carlton's that in this respect alone the blues were always playing against a tremendous handicap. The creditable thing was that they never gave in, but played to the last moment with the same dash and vigour that they showed at the outset. Carlton more than any other club failed to realise that big men are demanded by the new rules, a point strongly impressed upon them in this game by the work of such men as Hailwood, McGarry, Monahan, and others, and it was pitiful to see the light Carlton forwards to step the rushes of the sturdy Collingwood backs, and as a rule failing, though with all the disabilities clever little O'Cock snapped a couple of goals".

Collingwood’s full forward Dan Lanigan later played for Carlton in 1899.

After this result, Carlton ended their first season in the VFL in 7th spot on the ladder, with a percentage of 51.0.
