Carlton continued on their merry way with a great 24 point win against Hawthorn at Princes Park, and it was the Blues' much improved rover Vin Catoggio who played a significant role in the victory. Catoggio used his pace and ball handling skills to considerable advantage and set up many attacking moves. Blues youngster Wayne Harmes, showed that he is going to a future star with the Blues after a starring role in the back pocket. Harmes showed great dash from the defensive half and set up a lot of attacking play for his team mates. - Inside Football Player of the Year.
''Blues loom large as flag threats.
The Navy Blues are back in town! Jezza's giants have taken all before them and are poised to capture third place on the ladder and flag favoratism if they defeat Collingwood on Saturday. Last Saturday's victory against top side Hawthorn at Princes Park was a great one for the Blues and it was their ninth win in the 11 matches that Jesaulenko has been coaching them. Jezza has transformed Carlton from potential wooden spooners to potential premiers in the space of just three months! His own form has not been affected, and his value on the field to Carlton is enormous. The players claim that they have never been fitter and their devotion to Jesaulenko and the task before them has been great. BEWARE THE BOYS IN BLUE - Inside Football.''
This was a great win for an up and coming Blues outfit, especially considering that Hawthorn would eventually become the premiers for 1978. This season proved to be a great platform into the 1979 season, and helped spawn a dynasty that was to win three of the next four VFL premierships. The Blues would then take then rightful place at the top of the premiership ladder which they still hold to this day.
