Game Review
Carlton hosted 4th placed Sydney, who needed to win to ensure a home final. Carlton were 2 games outside the 8 and needed to not only win its remaining 2 games but hope that other results went their way.The game was played in pouring rain, which would make scoring difficult- for the Swans especially- who failed to score at all in the first quarter, though the Blues were able to manage 3 goals. Only one goal was scored in the second quarter- by Carlton. The Swans could only manage 6 behinds and remained goalless at half time. Carlton kicked the first goal of the second half after Stephen Silvagni cleared the ball from winning a contest with Lockett- as he did all day- to give the Blues a 5 goal advantage. But in the second half of the third quarter, the Swans kicked 4 unanswered goals and the margin was just a goal at 3/4 time, with the Swans coming home with the aid of the breeze and all the momentum. But the Blues kicked 6 unanswered goals in the final quarter and it took the Swans until the last minute of the game to score their only goal, going down in the end by 35 points.
Brett Ratten continually won the ball out of the packs, gathering 36 possessions and Best on Ground. Craig Bradley showed penty of run and carry with 24, as did Darren Hulme. Silvagni kept Lockett to just one fortunate kick for the day (which should have been a free kick agaimst him after he pushed Silvagni)- from which he goaled. Peter Dean provided plenty of run off half back and late in the game, ran as far as the goals. He had 22 possessions. Up forward, Brad Pearce, in his 50th game for Carlton, proved too elusive for the Swans defence, kicking 5 of Carlton's 11 goals.
