Game Review

Due to adverse weather conditions Saturday's matches were cancelled.
This match was played on a King's Birthday Holiday Thursday, but Carlton didn't mind at all, because we posted another much-needed win over the competition bunnies; St Kilda. The Carlton team had Union Jacks sewn onto the backs of their guernseys, and before the start of the game both teams joined and sang the National Anthem. The ground was in poor condition due to recent rain, but a clever and entertaining game was played both teams.

''"The best contests took place across the centre lines, but Carlton's superior strength in the ruck was manifest from start to finish, their marking, kicking, and exchanging being admirable, considering the day.""

"All the Carlton men had the Union Jack on the backs of their guernseys. Perhaps they thought the Saints were pro-Boers."
(Jack Worrall, The Referee May 30)

"Rowlands (Roland) was the best man on the Carlton side. The duels between him and H. Smith were always keen and interesting, but on the whole the honours were with Rowlands. Rigby, on the other wing, never tired, and was always busy and clever. Thompson as full-back did good work, in fact never made a mistake, and his kicking in was wonderful. Sharkey was a little behind him in defence, and McShane lent valuable assistance. Lewis played a slashing game forward, and Curtis and McNamara were also prominent. Morrison probably handled the ball more often than any two ruckmen in the game, and was invincible at the throw-in. Carlton beat St.Kilda all day in the ruck, Morrison, Walsh, and Considine being too strong for them." (Herald May 25 p7)

At the end of this round Carlton were in 7th spot on the ladder with a percentage of 63.2.
