Fevola's 150th, Stevo's 200th and the chance that if Fev kicked 7 he would overtake Jesaulenko in Carlton's goal kicking list, and the Blues fans were up for the match.
Carlton welcomed back Richard Hadley after a few weeks off and selected Cain Ackland for his first match of the year after pre-season surgery. It would prove to be Ackland's last match for the year, and at Carlton.
In a painful reminder of the distance Carlton still needs to travel, we were dissected by a strong Lions outfit in the opening quarter and conceded 8 goals to just 2. The Blues appeared a little lethargic, made too many errors and we were annihilated out of the ruck. The Lions pounced on mistakes and many of their goals looked very easy.
Although the margin blew out in the second, the Carlton team were not to concede and continued to fight hard. With Fevola a little wayward at the start (3 behinds from his first 3 shots on goal, all gettable) starting to hit the mark, and the impressive Marc Murphy and Chris Judd winning some of the clearances, the Blues at least fought out the game and at times looked to be putting together some good patches of play. With each surge however, the Lions would chip back with quick goals in a sure sign of a good team.
Heath Scotland finished with 39 possessions, Marc Murphy had a career-high 32 and Fevola kicked 5 goals. Young Blue Rookie Michael Jamison kept form forward Daniel Bradshaw out of the game until he hurt his shoulder in the third, and together with Paul Bower and Steven Browne would display performances to match our hope for this young defence.
